Overview
Those old enough to remember Laugh In, back when there were only three TV channels to choose from, will remember how its uproarious and irreverent humor soon had the whole nation tuning in and quoting lines from it the next day. The hippy sit-ins of the 60s gave the name to the show, but its popularity was universal. With a cast of running characters and a huge list of Hollywood guests, America fell in love with the crazy, fun, socially relevant, and political jokes made every week. Even John Wayne and President Richard Nixon made appearances during its run from 1968 to 1973. Director Grace Knapton chose the show both from her own happy memories of its TV run, but also for how much the students loved it when she last staged it in 2005. Set in front of the iconic huge psychedelic set, PYA’s “Laugh In” features a cast of dozens, led by emcee comedians Dan Rowan and Dick Martin, played by Kevin Conrad and Patrick Gulick, along with characters you’ll remember like Edith Ann, Goldie, The Old Maid and The Dirty Old Man. The outlandish and witty sketches are remarkably fitting our lives and country. And the famous one-liners like, “Here Come da Judge,” “Very interesting,” and “Sock it to me!” get laughs almost by reflex now, as well as for the humor which feels as fresh and energetic as ever.
